What are direct bookings? 

Direct bookings: are bookings you get that are independent of all big booking platforms (Airbnb, Booking, VRBO etc). 

These platforms charge you and your guests 10-20% of your revenue. When a guest pays one of these platforms $100 for a stay, you can expect to see $80-90. 

Let's zoom out and add up those fees over a year: if you do $50k in revenue on these platforms, you're paying 5-10k in platform fees. If you take $50k worth of bookings directly, you'll pay ZERO in platform fees.
